About This Novel

A black novel written in "code", the nightmare and memory of an era. Norman Manea's most important literary work. Norman Manea, a Romanian Jewish writer, a Nazi concentration camp survivor and exile, lives in the English-speaking world but insists on writing in his native language. His works are widely praised for their extremely deep compassion and "passionate and exciting sense of literary justice". His writing makes us realize that language gives people dignity and makes history possible; language gives people a place of belonging and gives exiles a foundation. In the novel "The Black Envelope", which was born after many difficulties, Manea started from his personal experience and narrated various stories in another wall in the post-Auschwitz era. This may be his best work.
