Girl in Cupboard
by (us) Kimberly Brubaker Bradley
About This Novel
Her mother forbade Ada to go out and only allowed her to look out the window. If she found that she had done something wrong, she would be locked in a dark and damp cupboard all night. All this is because Ada's feet are disabled. When World War II broke out, the government wanted to evacuate London's children to the countryside to escape bombing, but her mother forbade Ada to leave. But Ada refused to accept her fate. She stole a pair of shoes from her mother, left the cage-like apartment with her brother, and boarded the train. When they arrived in the countryside, no one was willing to accept the dirty siblings. They were forced to live with Miss Smith, who claimed to be "not a good person", and the fate of the three people changed.
