About This Novel

Lao He picked me up at the border of Jingbian County. This is the etiquette in northern Shaanxi. Dropping off and picking up people are done at the county boundary. Lao He and I have talked on the phone many times, and there was no sense of strangeness after meeting. But his appearance is completely different from what I imagined. The Lao He on the phone feels rustic and should be wearing a "Mao suit", or a sheepskin jacket, or a "sheep tripe", but the real Lao He is wearing a straight suit, a dazzling red tie, gold-rimmed glasses shining proudly in the sun, and a well-kempt hair style. He does not look like a receptionist in a government department, but very much like a scholar-type boss in the northwest region. After the people from Mizhi County greeted Lao He, they formally said, "We have handed over Lao Wu to you." Lao He adjusted his glasses and said with a smile, "Come back." I found that Lao He loves to laugh. When he smiles, Lao He looks amiable.
