The Biggest Genres in Chinese Web Fiction, by the Numbers

Everyone has an impression of what Chinese web fiction is mostly about. Here is what the catalogue actually says.

English-language discussion of Chinese web fiction is dominated by cultivation novels, because those are the ones that got translated. That impression is badly wrong about the actual shape of the market.

This is a count. About 2.3 million indexed titles across Qidian and Fanqie, grouped by the platform's own primary category. The live numbers are on the stats page; these were taken in August 2026.

Qidian, by category

Category Chinese Titles
Eastern Fantasy 玄幻 146,196
Urban 都市 108,318
Light Novel 轻小说 97,340
Cultivation 仙侠 71,353
Ancient Romance 古代言情 68,788
Modern Romance 现代言情 67,954
Short Story 短篇 67,074
Sci-Fi 科幻 59,320
Western Fantasy 奇幻 50,897
Historical 历史 45,397
Mystery & Supernatural 悬疑灵异 28,486
Gaming 游戏 25,179
Fantasy Romance 玄幻言情 24,029
Infinite Myriad Worlds 诸天无限 23,806

Xuanhuan is the largest category and it is not close: about 146,000 titles, roughly a third more than the next one. This is the genre that defines Qidian, and if you have a mental image of "a Chinese web novel", it is almost certainly xuanhuan.

Two things in that table usually surprise people.

Cultivation is fourth, not first. Xianxia is about 71,000 titles, less than half of xuanhuan's. The genre that dominates English-language translation is a minority of even Qidian's catalogue. The reason is straightforward: xianxia travels well because its furniture is exotic and its structure is legible, so translators picked it. That is a selection effect in the translations, not a fact about the source.

Light Novel is third. 轻小说 at about 97,000 is anime-styled fiction, and it is one of the largest things on the platform. It rarely appears in English-language discussion at all.

Fanqie, by category

Category Chinese Titles
Modern Romance 现代言情 259,803
Urban 都市 217,359
Ancient Romance 古代言情 163,092
Eastern Fantasy 玄幻 118,717
Historical 历史 82,300
Mystery 悬疑 68,853
Sci-Fi & Apocalypse 科幻末世 51,139
Sports 体育 26,692
Fantastical Romance 幻想言情 9,826
Martial Arts 武侠 9,750
Rural Life 乡村 4,127
Cultivation 仙侠 1,920

A completely different distribution. Romance in its two main forms is over 420,000 titles, nearly a third of the catalogue. Urban is another 217,000. The fantasy end that dominates Qidian is fourth here.

The divergence is the interesting part

Put the two side by side and the free-versus-paid split shows up as genre economics.

Category Qidian Fanqie Ratio
Cultivation 仙侠 71,353 1,920 37× Qidian
Eastern Fantasy 玄幻 146,196 118,717 1.2× Qidian
Modern Romance 现代言情 67,954 259,803 3.8× Fanqie
Ancient Romance 古代言情 68,788 163,092 2.4× Fanqie
Urban 都市 108,318 217,359 2× Fanqie
Historical 历史 45,397 82,300 1.8× Fanqie

Cultivation is the extreme case: thirty-seven times more prevalent on the paid platform. That is not an accident of what authors happen to like.

Xianxia is a genre of accumulation. Realms, decades of seclusion, sect politics that pay off four hundred chapters later. It needs a reader who has committed, and a paid platform selects for exactly that reader.

Free, ad-funded reading rewards the opposite: immediate emotional payoff in short sessions. Romance and urban fiction deliver that natively, and the numbers show it. The economics of the platform select the genre, not the other way around.

What the tag layer shows

Genre is the platform's category tree. Tags are what readers actually pick by, and they cut across the whole catalogue:

Tag Chinese Books
Transmigration 穿越 519,869
System 系统 292,752
Urban 都市 217,003
Rebirth 重生 170,694
Derivative works 衍生 132,959
Doujin 同人 126,593
Face-slapping 打脸 110,067
Sweet pampering 甜宠 98,489
CEO 总裁 97,067

Transmigration alone is on about 520,000 books, roughly a fifth of everything indexed. It is not a subgenre, it is a default narrative frame, the way first-person past tense is a default in English fiction. Add rebirth and soul-transmigration and displaced protagonists account for a substantial fraction of the entire market.

The System tag at about 293,000 is the other structural giant, and it is much newer. It solves the specific problem of writing 3,000 characters a day for four years: a system supplies an unlimited stream of concrete short-term goals. It is a serialisation technology as much as a trope.

And note derivative fiction: 衍生 and 同人 together are over 250,000 titles. Commercial platforms hosting fan fiction at that scale, alongside original work, has no direct Western equivalent.

The full tag glossary explains what each of these means.

What this changes about how you read the market

The English-language canon is not representative. It over-weights cultivation by a very large factor. There is an enormous amount of urban, light-novel and romance fiction that has essentially no English presence.

Romance is the largest thing in Chinese web fiction. Across the two platforms, modern and ancient romance together are over 550,000 titles, more than any other grouping including all of fantasy. It is under-discussed in English almost entirely because of which side of the fandom did the translating.

Platform choice is genre choice. Do not go looking for xianxia on Fanqie or for the deepest romance catalogue on Qidian. The category tables above are the map.

Tags cut across everything. Transmigration, system and rebirth appear in every genre on both platforms. If you like the shape of a story rather than its setting, filter by tag and ignore genre entirely.

The counts here move daily. The stats page has the current figures, and both catalogues are browsable and filterable: Qidian, Fanqie.
